Karlach Baldur's Gate 3
Karlach – Credits: Gamesual

You must explore the area outside the Blighted Village known as the Risen Road before beginning Karlach’s questline. This starts the quest “Hunt the Devil,” which explores Karlach’s past as a former prisoner dragged into the bloody conflict she appropriately describes as an eternal battle between a rock and the complex space.  Karlach, playing the part of a Barbarian, possesses a powerful main strength, Stat of 17, essential to her fighting ability.

She can be discovered along The Risen Road, and her quest to identify the person who held her captive reflects the age-old theme of retribution. Karlach adds significant DPS and entertaining material as a Zariel Tiefling Warrior.

Why did I Choose Karlach?

She excels at close combat, dealing consequential damage to adversaries while also assisting in discovering hidden treasure, such as the early-game scuffed rock.

One of my favorite things about Karlach is her personality. She may look scary, but she is a sweetheart. During her companion quest, a violent encounter with pursuing Paladins sets off an explosive fit of wrath that causes everything to burst into flames as she screams vulgar phrases. This intriguing feature highlights Karlach’s uniqueness and status as a beloved companion in the alluring world of Baldur’s Gate 3.

  • High Strength for close combat.
  • Excellent DPS.

  • Limited ranged abilities.
  • Aggressive demeanor.

Minthara Baldur's Gate 3
Minthara – Credits: Gamesual

The Shattered Sanctum is home to Minthara, an NPC, possible boss, and ally in Baldur’s Gate 3. This stubborn Drow leader, a symbol of her cruelty, prepares a savage assault on Druid Grove. As a Drow Paladin, Minthara plans an important assault that puts friends in conflict with one another and poses a moral choice.

As one of the three goblin rulers in the goblin campsite, Minthara appears in the first act. Her presence forces decisions that will have a significant impact. You become her ally if you decide to assist her in her search for Druid Grove. She needs a wicked mindset; the road to that attitude is paved with ethically questionable choices.

Why did I Choose Minthara?

Minthara’s Paladin skills combine offense and support by acting as both a melee damage dealer and a healer.

Her loyalty allows access to Moonrise Towers without restriction, avoiding the curse’s effects. From my experience, this may be your best bet if you are looking for a safe way in. If you do come across her as an enemy, by taking advantage of a tactical opening, one can ensure her doom by causing the bridge to fall and killing her without alarming the goblins.

  • Strong Paladin with offense and support.
  • Provides access to Moonrise Towers.

  • Requires morally questionable choices.
  • Potential conflict with companions.

Astarion Baldur's Gate 3
Astarion – Credits: Gamesual

Early in Act 1, Astarion, a companion from Baldur’s Gate 3, appears and draws players to the Nautiloid accident site on the shore. This High-Elf Rogue is an excellent addition to your party because of his skill with trickery. Although during my playthrough, I was already playing as a Rogue, still having him around the camp added a few fun storylines.

Why did I Choose Astarion?

He specializes in precision weapons like dual-wielding daggers for consequential primary damage. His captivating character growth reveals a complex persona hidden under a noble façade.

Astarion spent ages working for a wicked master after being captured as a vampire kid. He struggles with letting go of his evil and tragic history despite being freed from his vampiric restraints. His complex nature gives fascination and depth to his identity, even though he is often criticized for his whiny attitude.

Encountering Astarion amidst the wreckage of the Nautiloid crash transpires on the southwest Ravaged Beach.

He asks for help dealing with brain things, displaying his excellent strategic awareness. Astarion is a rogue by nature; therefore, his speed and damage levels are significant advantages in joining forces with him.

He can also heal himself by biting foes when necessary, a valuable substitute for potions or aid from allies. While Astarion’s constant questions about vampires can be annoying in conversation, his compelling story revolves around an intriguing idea.

His plot picks up steam early in the game, indicating a rewarding journey ahead, making him a beneficial companion choice.

  • Dual-wielding daggers.
  • Self-healing ability.

  • Whiny attitude.
  • Struggles with tragic history.

Shadowheart Baldur's Gate 3
Shadowheart – Credits: Gamesual

Act 1 also opens access to Shadowheart, a Baldur’s Gate 3 companion. You can find her near a tomb door on the post-crash seashore or rescue her in the Nautiloid part. This Half-Elf, a skilled Deception Cleric, grants your group various healing powers and fascinating sneak and misdirection spells. Shadowheart is my favorite character from the campaign and a must-have for any party.

Shadowheart, a devout follower of Shar, sets out on a risky quest to acquire a powerful item while struggling with her fading faith and mysterious, uncontrolled magic.

She faces obstacles from many directions and hides a long-kept secret that demands to be revealed. During the opening scene, saving Shadowheart from a capsule is an essential encounter made possible by a rune’s clever placement next to a nearby panel.

Shadowheart's location

Shadowheart is a devoted Shar priest tasked with bringing a sacred artifact to her coven at Baldur’s Gate. She becomes a key figure in figuring out the complex story since she is the only one to survive a sacred mission and the accompanying encounter with mysterious, emerging magic.

Why did I Choose Shadowheart?

Shadowheart is a crucial component of any party, using her Cleric spells to strengthen assaults, support teammates, and inflict crippling conditions on enemies. Her tactical intelligence encourages an organized strategy to fight rather than a careless encounter. Although she is not exceptionally durable out of all companions, her healing expertise makes her a vital asset for beginners and getting accustomed to Baldur’s Gate 3’s difficulty.

  • Skilled Cleric with healing powers.
  • Mysterious backstory.

  • Not particularly durable.
  • Limited approval

Lae'zel Baldur's Gate 3
Lae’zel – Credits: Gamesual

Why did I Choose Lae’zel?

Lae’zel is a Companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 who appears as you leave the Nautiloid. She strengthens your group with powerful martial skills as a fierce Githyanki Fighter, excelling in high DPS and viable shielding positions. She is vital to anyone seeking combat skills and has an eye for killing illithids.

Lae’zel has received excellent training to become a Githyanki Fighter, making her an intimidating opponent on the battlefield. This warrior is relentless as she battles the oncoming danger of dealing with that curse that will transform her into the exact monsters she has vowed to defeat. In my opinion, her aggressive behavior was a little annoying, still, she managed to get a lot of work done.

Lae’zel appears early in the opening scene within the Nautiloid, demonstrating her aggressive and blunt personality. Lae’zel excels in close-quarters battle as a Fighter, taking a lot of damage from enemies and acting as a solid tank during many fights.

Her outspoken nature does, however, occasionally cause conflict, especially when she is around Shadowheart. Her steadfast mission-centric approach is made clear by her dislike for distractions, strengthening her dedication to Githyanki-related matters.

Lae’zel’s character development enhances the story, even though some players may not agree with her perspective. She will tremendously help you on your adventure through Baldur’s Gate 3 thanks to her combat prowess, unshakable dedication, and potential to play the DPS role, especially without other companions like Karlach.

  • High Strength for DPS.
  • Aggressive personality.

  • May cause conflicts.
  • Dislike for distractions.

Halsin Baldur's Gate 3
Halsin Baldur’s Gate 3 Credits: Gamesual

Deep inside the Shattered Sanctum, in the Worg Pens, you can find Halsin, a powerful, durable, and transformative companion in Baldur’s Gate 3. Halsin was a well-known person as the initial Celtic of the Druid Grove, and his disappearance while traveling with Aradin is still a crucial mystery. The different NPCs’ beliefs, goals, and lifestyles are tightly entwined with their deeds in the vast Baldur’s Gate 3 world, affecting how they perceive you and your team.

Halsin’s Druid identity, which has an unbreakable connection to the Druid Grove, becomes apparent upon encountering him in his prisoner state. An alliance is formed by saving him, but it also makes other characters hostile. His availability is revealed in the Goblin Camp’s Worg Pens in the Shattered Sanctum.

I recommend packing up on resources before you go on to save him because one wrong move could get him killed and forever lost from the party.

It is necessary to finish the Druid’s Grove ‘Save the Refugees’ questline to recruit Halsin as a companion. This requires defeating the three commanders of the Goblin Camp. Halsin’s gear upon joining varies but is usually quite vague. Still, his potential as a Druid is highlighted by his mastery of various arsenals and armor, strong defensive enchantments, and shapeshifting abilities.

Why did I Choose Halsin?

Though facts of Halsin’s recruitment and his Druid skill set are unknown, his expertise likely resides in athletics, nature, and survival. This dynamic figure adds complexity to the story as Baldur’s Gate 3 develops and waits for confirmation and further investigation within the rich game environment.

  • Powerful Druid with shapeshifting.
  • Durable and transformative.

  • Limited information.
  • Initial disappearance is a mystery.

Wyll Baldur's Gate 3
Wyll Baldur’s Gate 3 Credits: Gamesual

Born into a noble family, Wyll’s heroism as the “Blade of Frontiers” hides a secret bargain with the devil that keeps him bound to a demonic agreement. He thinks about taking on the difficult task of rescuing the enticing creature responsible for the transaction, driven by a deep need to be free.

Wyll appears at the Druid’s Grove during the initial goblin battle and advises Tiefling youths. Wyll poses as a warrior, but his spellcasting skills are surprisingly powerful. Wyll’s richness is evident in the intricate past and fascinating dialogue. His contribution to every journey is enhanced by combining his expertise and personal story, but helping goblins makes him angry and jeopardizes his friendship.

Wyll's location
Wyll’s location Credits: Gamesual

Wyll is a character encountered in the opening scene at the Druid’s Grove during the Goblin Raid. His approval is based on good deeds, particularly those that support his heroic views.

Why did I Choose Wyll?

He emerges as a formidable and intriguing ally within Baldur’s Gate 3 universe due to his complex personality, rich storyline, and suitability with honorable deeds. I should remind you that Wyll does not like Goblins particularly and wouldn’t take it lightly if you help the Goblins.

  • Powerful Warlock with strong spells.
  • Complex personality and storyline.

  • He dislikes aiding goblins.
  • Limited details about the demonic pact.

Gale Baldur's Gate 3
Gale – Credits: Gamesual

Why did I Choose Gale?

A human wizard, Gale joins your group as a powerful spellcaster who will energize battle with solid magical skills. Being a wizard talent by nature, he was inspired by a goddess to go on a horrifyingly bold quest that trapped him in the forbidding magic of ancient Netheril.

Gale is battling the growing corruption and on a quest to purify his soul and win back the favor of his god to prevent a catastrophic transformation into an omen of doom.

Gale is a highly accomplished wizard, and his deep connection to the Goddess of Magic inspired him to strive to become Faerun’s most famed spellcaster. Despite the decreasing supernatural intervention, Gale is a versatile and skilled ally for any party formation. Aside from his combat prowess, his addition adds a dimension of mystery without provoking players’ boredom.

Gale’s intricate and moving friendship retains unique influence, compelling players outside of the battlefield, even when there are so many different companions that have the potential to spark romances. If it weren’t for Shadowheart, Gale would be my favorite character from Baldur Gate 3.

Gale is at the Ravaged Beach’s center. You can find him near the mysterious Roadside Cliffs Waypoint in the first act after the Nautiloid collision. Gale can be set free and brought into your company if you interact with the unique waypoint.

Gale's location
Gale’s location Credits: Gamesual

Gale’s unwavering desire to succeed as Faerûn’s leading wizard is set against the danger of an approaching calamity. A Netherese Destruction Orb, a never-ending countdown to a disastrous accident of city-leveling proportions, resides within him. Gale is one of the most morally upright companions in early access because of his unshakeable moral compass and fondness for noble tasks.

His liking for artifact consumption appears to be an easy way to win his acceptance to add him to your team as a fantastic companion. He is driven by his thirst for helping others and rejecting immoral decisions. Gale weaves spells and emotions into a dynamic story in Baldur’s Gate 3’s rich tapestry, acting as a morally honest and valued ally.

  • High Intelligence wizard.
  • Morally upright.

  • Driven by a quest with uncertainty.
  • Limited details about Netherese Destruction Orb.

Which Companion Do I Consider the Best?

I would consider Shadowheart, the best companion in Baldurs Gate 3.

Having the right companion is one of the most important choices I had to make in Baldurs Gate 3. Luckily, I could pick up to 3 other party members to help me in my campaign. However, if I could only pick one companion, I would always choose Shadowheart. Not only does she have a complex storyline, but she can also be a great support during combat.

Shadowheart is one of the best healers in the game and has made a world of difference throughout my time with the game.
