Unlockable Characters

Mortal Kombat 1 will have a few sets of characters that you will need to unlock. Although they are purchasable through the online store, you should unlock them via in-game progress. Specifically, there are two categories of characters: Fighters and Kameo Characters.

Fighters

This category does not involve too many characters on the unlockables list, which is quite a candid fact to consider. Regarding this, there are initially two fighting characters to unlock in Mortal Kombat 1.

  1. Shang Tsung
  2. Havik
  • You must pre-order the game to unlock Shang Tsung as a playable character in Mortal Kombat 1.
  • It doesn’t matter if you buy a premium edition of the game or just the base game. If you pre-order the game, then you meet the condition to unlock Shang Tsung. However, it may be possible that this might come as DLC in the future so that every player can access it.
  • For Havik, unlocking him is pretty traditional. All you have to do is complete the Story mode of the game. Although, you are free to unlock Havik at any time by making an in-game purchase.
  • Nonetheless, playing the story and unlocking it as a reward for your efforts is preferable.

Kameo Characters

After an extended period, NRS Studio finally decided to bring back Kameo-style fighting in the Mortal Kombat series. These characters are entirely different from fighting characters. Also, these unlockables are a bit more in number than fighting characters in Mortal Kombat 1.

  1. Scorpion
  2. Sub Zero
  3. Kung Lao
  4. Montaro
  5. Goro

You will unlock one Kameo character by gaining every five levels for your profile. Subsequently, you only need to reach level 25 to unlock every Kameo character.

Although you will gain experience playing any game mode, I suggest farming exp through Invasion mode. The reason is that in Invasion mode, you will face opponents constantly without much delay. Moreover, defeating those enemies only requires clearing one round of the fight.

Furthermore, you will gain points that you can spend on the character’s attributes. This will allow you to strengthen and clear up the fights more effectively. As a result, you will gain a decent amount of experience quickly.

Unlockable Cosmetics

Mortal Kombat 1 provides various choices to customize your favorite character through many unlockables. Specifically, when it comes to cosmetics, there are plenty of options to go through.

  • Gear
  • Palettes
  • Taunts
  • Finishers

Throughout the play time, any player will earn lots of in-game currency. These Koins can help unlock an abundance of cosmetics. Select Shrine from the Extras option in the game’s main menu. From there, it will ask you to spend 1000 Koins. Once you consume them, there is a chance that you will obtain a Gear of any tier.

Unlocking cosmetics through Shrine might be the simplest way, but it is tiresome as you will not get cosmetics on every try. Moreover, I have not yet experienced any chance of getting Taunts and Palettes through it.

If you wish to focus on customizing only your favorite character, then playing Invasion mode is best. Following this, each character will have its progress. Therefore, ranking up a specific character will unlock its Gears, Palettes, Taunts, and Finishers. Note that character rank and profile level are different aspects of the game.

In addition to that, the main menu will have a Store option. From there, you can purchase Seasonal and Premium unlockables of Mortal Kombat 1. You may also buy some in-game currency of the game from that store.

Unlockable Extras

Mortal Kombat 1 offers much extra stuff to witness and entertain yourself with arts, music, and movies. These unlockables are quite much in the game, and you will acquire them through playing the game. The further you progress in the game, the more it will behold you with its engaging adornments.

  • Concept Arts
  • Environmental Image
  • Music
  • Movies

The most agreeable method, in my opinion, to unlock Extras is through Shrine. Along with Extras, there will also be a chance to unlock cosmetics. So here, you will put yourself in a win-win situation.

For any beginner, personal advice to earn numerous Koins is through the Tutorial. There is a lot to gain from that mode. Besides earning Koins, you can learn the basics, advance, and even land perfect combos.

However, the Movies category will not unlock through any convenient method. You will have to play the Towers in Story mode for that purpose. I played the towers on Novice difficulty, which resulted in unlocking Movies at a faster pace. With each difficulty you increase, there will be the addition of fights that you need to progress through.

So, if you want to save time while unlocking the Movies for every character, Novice difficulty will be the best option.

Other than that, you can also unlock portrait and background images for your profile. In the main menu, you will have the option to go to your profile and customize it. Just look at the top right corner of the screen.

My Remarks

You will definitely get suggestions that Invasion mode is the best method to Rank up a character and unlock its cosmetics. However, I have observed that playing Online matches and winning them will instantly grant you massive experience. Moreover, a simple Kasual match will get the job done.

To summarize, players can access unlockables in Mortal Kombat 1 by simply playing the game. This experience makes the environment of the game exceptionally rewarding. Additionally, rewards come with almost every mode you play in Mortal Kombat 1.

Therefore, you will get around with gratifying outcomes along with your skills improvement.
