In a world where games are announced or revealed in plenty of ridiculous or over-the-top ways having a CEO spill the beans are pretty embarrassing. Sadly this was the fate of Mortal Kombat 12, as it was accidentally announced in the Warner Bros Discovery Earning report. To say this is embarrassing is an understatement, but one of the highlights has been Ed Boon’s response. How Ed Boon responds to the Mortal Kombat 12 leak has got to be one of the funniest things any game company Ceo could have done in this scenario.

Summary

  • The existence of Mortal Kombat 12 was inadvertently leaked at an earnings call for NetherRealm parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.
  • From the leak, we also got an idea of the title’s release date; interestingly enough, it will be this year.
  • In light of this massive outburst of information, Ed Boon responded to the situation with a post on Twitter.

To say that a leak can tell us only so much about a game is an understatement, but sometimes the source of a leak can tell us something too. The source of the said leak, being the CEO of a major corporation, is not something that I think anyone had expected.

Now, this doesn’t mean the info that I got was terrible. It just makes it strange. So with that in mind, let’s go ahead and see what we learned from the leak.

The leak has given us two important points to look at. The first of these is the fact that NetherRealm’s next title will be Mortal Combat 12. This makes sense because Mortal Kombat is one of their flagship franchises. Strangely, there had been no hints about this beforehand.

The second piece of information that we got was that it would be released in 2023. This is a good date, as it has been several years since their last game release. The funny thing is that we have had no teasing or promotional material for the game yet. If true, we are bound for a sudden promotion blast just before the game comes out. This is a great marketing idea. It is just surprising to see a gaming company using it.

Of course, this is not how any game studio would want to see one of their projects announced. That is having been said; Ed Boon had the best response to the whole situation. He just put out a tweet yesterday as a response where he asked if anyone had heard the news about Injustice 3. This was a strong bit of sarcasm that was designed to help alleviate the tension that had started to sweep over the fanbase.

This is a very mature way to handle the situation and a good example for other companies to follow. I also hope that this means we will get an Injustice 3 at some point in the future. Hopefully announced by NetherRealm and not an earnings call.

That is all that we have on Ed Boon response to the Mortal Kombat 12 leak.
